Learning About The Othello Board Game

Othello, marketed and made known by Pressman, also called Reversi, is an excellent board game that involves use of abstract strategy. The board game is played by 2 players using a board. The board consists of 8 columns and rows plus some unique play pieces for each side. Playing pieces look like small smooth discs in which one side is a light in shade and the other is dark, one side for each player. The primary goal of the players is to make sure by turning them over, that at the game’s end more of their discs are showing than their opponents.

As the game progresses and the players keep making their wisest moves, they have to trap the other one’s discs in a way that the discs cannot escape. But be aware that even the opponent is free to do that and so it is a kind of a deception. Pieces will keep showing your color or the opponent’s color every now and then as the game moves and ultimately the winner of the game is the one who has most of the pieces of his color showing and when no more moves can or pieces can be played on the board. Sequence, The Board Game

Sequence is a card and board game. It typically consists of a board that depicts all the cards without the Jacks. The cards are from two usual 52-card decks, arranged in a 10 x 10 layout. Four spaces are left free at the four corners. What players need to do is compete against each other to make diagonals, rows or columns using 5 connected checkers made on the cards that the player has laid down. The Two-eyed Jacks are special and devious too as the one-eyed Jacks enable the opponent’s checker to be taken off!

It also consists of 50 green marker chips, 35 red marker chips and 50 blue marker chips. Each player has a certain number of cards and each one lays his or her cards on the board. And then his chip needs to be placed further on the card. The players continue to try and keep their chips five of them either diagonally, horizontally or vertically. Simultaneously they should try and stop other players from achieving a sequence.

The moment a player lays down one card, he or she can draw another one. If any of the players do not draw a card prior to the next player discarding one card, he or she is not allowed to draw a card in the next turn. This gives them a setback. The players cannot in any manner motivate or urge the other players to play or strategize in a particular way. If any of the players do it, they will have to give up a card. The game progresses steadily in a clockwise direction of the board. There is a winner when a person reaches a particular number of connections or sequences. It is exciting game of strategy. It’s great fun and poses a great challenge every time!

It comes under the sub-category of abstract games that are theme-less or essentially without a storyline but created on simple or straightforward mechanics and design. They are excellent information games and one that hinges on overtaking the opponent. In such games there tiny, if at all, element of random occurrence, what you may call luck or chance. It takes about 10 minutes to play the game. Children from 7 years upwards can easily play the game, although children from 7 to 10 years may need guidance from time to time.

The game which was first published in 1982; is best played with 3 to 4 players. It can be played with 2, 3, 4 or even 12 players. The Sequence board game is originally an old card game known as Jack Foolery. It is an interesting game involving application of good reasoning and strategy. It gets more exciting when someone is about to make all the intended sequences or probably waiting for one of the right cards to complete the last few sequences.  It makes for great entertainment for both children and adults, especially on rainy nights when all your plans had to be cancelled!

Childrens Board Games Top Five Fun

Like many others I love playing board games and have done since I was a child. You start off with simple fun games like Snakes and Ladders and Ludo, really get into them when you get a compendium of games off granny or granddad for Christmas and there you are, hooked for life.

Every Christmas you see tempting new games advertised on the television or in magazines and as you get older you teach your kids and then grandkids how to play board games just so you can enjoy them together. This year the top five board games being sold for kids are quite a mixture, but all fun. Let’s see what they are:

5. Cluedo Harry Potter

I have the original Cluedo game and have always enjoyed playing it, but I’m not sure about this twist on the original. But hey, I’m sure that todays kids are more likely to enjoy a game with Harry Potter baddies than the likes of Colonel Mustard and Miss Scarlet.

4. Twister

More of a floor game than a board game but just as much fun. It will keep the kids noisy but happy during Christmas day and tipsy adults entertained tying themselves in knots during the evening. It’s the game we adults love to hate but we still continue to buy it for our kids.

3. Tension The Zany Crazy Naming Game

For over 12s this game is basically a race against the clock to name 10 examples of a topic given, but you must guess the examples written on the game card. One to keep the brain sharp and have a great time competing with another team and especially at parties.

2. The Logo Board Game

A game for 2 – 6 players aged 12 and over the Logo Board Game has 1600 questions about products on sale in the UK. A sample question for instance is how many flavours of Rowntrees fruit pastilles are they? Get the questions right, move around the board and try to win.

1. Monopoly

This classic board game for 2 – 6 players is still number 1 after all these years, and the original not one of those special editions. Invented in 1934 over 200 million sets have been sold worldwide and in 26 languages. Amazing when you think of the simplicity of this game, moving around the board buying and selling properties and occasionally going to jail. I’ve spent many happy hours playing Monopoly and I’m sure that this superb board game will be around for many years to come. If they still have the old boot that’s my playing piece.

There you have it. The top 5 board games this year and 5 golden gift ideas for birthdays and Christmas. It’s great being able to give friends and family presents that you know will continue to entertain for a long time.

When the fun and games are over and you want to relax in front of the television just wave the magic wand remote control to switch your programmes on.
