You may have noticed a trend forming in the video game world. Many of the most popular games being released feature online gameplay. NBA 2K12, COD, and Madden 2012 are just a few titles that have sold in record numbers and will have hundreds of thousands of gamers on their networks around the clock.

Many gamers focus only on the online gaming options and treat the story mode and other features of the game as throw-in options. There is no denying that competing with and against other real people is thrilling and adds a whole new level to gaming. The education field has caught on to this concept of community and has increased the opportunity for students to work together to enhance online learning.

Jane McGonigal was featured on a Ted Talk discussing the benefits of online gaming on society.  One of the biggest features of online gaming she mentioned was the thousands of gamers available online who are willing and able to help you reach your goals in the game. You meet strangers and form teams sharing knowledge and supplies in order to win. The same perks are available for online learning.

iTunes U is a resource available that connects you with students and educators around the world who are willing help you succeed in your educational goals. They can assist you by sharing lectures, notes and assignments for you to view. Users are able to upload documents and to share with others. There are over 800 universities on the site that contribute resources. A section called “Beyond the Campus” that features content provided by the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public Library, PBS and the Public International Radio is available. All of this content is uploaded for you to access and to assist you in your online learning.

Have you ever heard of Grockit? If you haven’t, there’s a great chance that you will soon. This company is quickly gaining popularity and growing in size.
