The controller is good, plenty of buttons and 2 memory unit slots, but it is terribly uncomfortable. Me and everyone who has played one that I know agree. Don’t get it, it will make your hands hurt. Of course, that means, don’t get a dremacast. Though if you’re fine having your hands nearly dropping off, go ahead!

I’ve only recently purchased a Dreamcast and I think it’s a superb console with the best games available – however I absolutely DO NOT rate the controller.

The buttons are fine (buttons are button are buttons, after all), the L and R triggers are okay too, but it’s the analogue stick I have trouble with. I cannot get or keep a grip on the damn thing and it doesn’t appear to have a full range of movement (although I’m sure it actually does but it just doesn’t ‘feel’ like it).

The not-being-able-to-get-a-grip thing is very frustrating when you’re playing games – almost any type of game, really – for example when you need to get a shot on target in, say, Virtua Tennis, and for me the controller doesn’t allow this.

I love the Dreamcast itself and I love the games, but I am going to have to invest in a third party controller to get the best out of my games.

Although the official Dreamcast controller appears a well rounded product, after a few days of light gameplay the right trigger started squeaking and the A button because less springy. If you’re a devoted gamer who will be spending a lot of time on the console I suggest you buy a Mad Catz controller – the buttons are a lot more firm (they can still be pressed down flush with the surface). The only problem with the Mad Catz controller is that the D pad is made from rubber, making control a little difficult on games that require it. But, if this is not a problem go yfor it!

the lead for the controller comes out of the bottom but can be diverted by the u shaped part on the bottom of the pad, good thinking sega!

Am I the only person whose ended up with blistered thumbs from the analog stick – OK, maybe I’ve been playing MS-R for more than the recommended amount of time, but those little nobbly bits on top of the stick (presumably to help your grip) have left my thumb stinging. Having an N64 and Playstation as well I’d say that the rubberised stick on the PS Dual-Pad has to be the most comfortable to use, but other than that, yeah, good pad, nice design touches, the dual triggers seem to work really well.
