  1. Great fun, even though I am not very into video games, worth the money and your wife can join in as well.

This game has given us hours of fun whilst providing gentle excercise. No matter what age you are, there is something for everyone. The Motionplus is a must for this game.

This game is fab! Remember how much fun you had when you first Wii Play and Wii Sport? Well, this game is a much higher quality product! There are 12 different events, each of which have different versions (much akin to Wii Fit). A second controller + accessory is a must, however, as it’s truly competitive gaming at its best.

To name and review a few of the minigames:

    Swordplay

One of my favourites! Though more tactical than I first thought, it’s hilarious watching my fiancée do the Wii version of button-bashing as it looks like she’s throwing a real tantrum!

    Archery

The controls are more natural than the ones in Mario and Sonic at the Olympics. Whilst this makes firing the arrow simpler, there are different difficulties incorporating different ranges and wind-strengths. Shooting from inside a cavern has much less wind than on a rope bridge!

    Basketball

Yes, Basketball! Quite tricky to master, but the mechanics are similar to actually shooting hoops, and thankfully a bit easier to hit the target than the real thing. (I’m appalling on the court, but it is fun!)

    Table Tennis

Remember the shockingly poor table tennis in the Wii Play? Well, this is nothing like that! This mini game is so much improved over its predecessor that I can hardly believe they’re on the same console.

    Overall

This game has finally evicted Mario-Kart from the position of “usually left in the drive overnight”. When we have guests we like to play some of most games but this is the one we easily spend most time on.

Note: Gone are the days of just flicking your wrist a little, you really have to swing your arm properly as this item really can tell and reacts very differently!

  4. As a big fan of Wii Sports I was looking forward to playing Wii Sports Resort as it was marketed as not so much a sequel – but an upgrade because of the Motion Plus add-on.

The Motion Plus is impressive and I personally think that the movements are now very accurate whereas before they were just approximate (but still pretty good). This makes games such as Archery and Sword Fighting possible and instead of feeling a bit hit-and-miss (pardon the pun) you feel in full control of what is happening on screen.

I’m not a big fan of all the games though, I found some such as Power Cruising to be very difficult to control, but in time I’m sure I’ll get the knack of it. But with so many games and their unlockable variations there’s bound to be something for everyone on there. Because the movements are more accurately reflected on screen the games require a bit more skill and practice – and that’s fair enough but the truth is that a lot of people who have the Wii console are not big gamers. A lot of folk drag out the Wii every couple of weeks for a quick play and the console is fantastic for that because many games can be simply picked up and played. For those people (and I’m one of them) this may not be the best purchase for the Wii as some of the games need regular play and practise in order for you to become proficient at them. Wii Bowling is a good example – on ‘classic’ Wii Sports I’m not great at it but I get by and manage respectable scores, but with Wii Sports Resort Bowling I really need to stick at it and play more regularly to develop the skill level to be any good at it!

But as this is a family orientated Nintendo product, it doesn’t take itself too seriously and if you do end up having abysmal sessions on some of the games you don’t mind too much – it’s all very bright and it feels light hearted. The games really do get you involved, and both the cycling and canoeing games get you burning off energy, I enjoyed the physical aspects of those and was genuinely out of breath after playing them!

In a nutshell: More serious gamers will no doubt quickly advance though these games and give some impressive performances, whereas casual gamers will love most of the games but perhaps get frustrated by some as they don’t have the time to invest in perfecting their technique and may prefer the original Wii Sports. Either way though, Wii Sports Resort offers a good bunch of mini-games which can be enjoyed on your own – but are far more fun when you have someone to play against.
